Science and Education Opportunities Aboard UNOLS Vessels

UNOLS has 21 research vessels that operate in the coastal waters of the United States, the Great Lakes, and the World's oceans.  These vessels range from 66 to 279 feet.  Each year a portion of our cruises have available space for science and education opportunities.  A list of available cruises aboard these vessels will be maintained on the UNOLS website.  Opportunities are based on the amount of space available on individual vessels and the willingness of the Chief Scientist to have extra personnel participate in the cruise.  The Chief Scientist might also require that individuals serve as "Watchstanders" (see next paragraph).

Chief Scientists will occasionally recruit "Watchstanders" to assist in their research cruise.  Watchstanders are members of the science party and are expected to participate in the daily routine as required by the scientific schedule.  To see the general criteria for watchstanders and available Education and Outreach Opportunities on UNOLS Vessels please view the listing below.

A Listing of Education and Outreach Cruise Opportunities

Interested in participating in an oceanographic cruise? Individuals are often recruited to help stand watch and collect data. Additionally, berths are sometimes available and can accommodate ancillary science, education, and outreach activities.  The Chief Scientist might sometimes ask the individual(s) associated with these ancillary activities, to assist in the cruise by also standing watch.  Any cruise responsibilities and expectations should be clearly articulated and agree upon between the Chief Scientist and individual(s) occupying the available berth(s) prior to the cruise.

General criteria are:

A list of cruise opportunities is provided below. If you are interested in participating in any of these cruises, arrangements should be made with the Point of Contact listed for the cruise.

03/24/2012 - 04/14/2012 Atlantis western North Atlantic CLIVAR/CO2 Repeat Hydrography: A22(66W)

CTD watchstander, CFC analyst

Students will work with scientists to carry out the CTD casts, assist with documentation and water sampling, and examine the data. Basic computer skills are required, all other training will be provided. There is also an opportunity for a graduate student to assist with the CFC/SF6 sampling and analysis program. Applicants for these position are likely to be interested in ocean chemistry or application of tracers to physical oceanographic problems. Training in gas chromatography will be provided. Basic computer skills are required and course work in basic chemistry is desirable.

These are fully funded student positions open to registered graduate students in good standing at US institutions. Graduate students must have approval from their graduate advisorsfor participation.

02/14/2012 to 03/06/2012 Ronald H. Brown 26N 80-69W NOAA Ronald H. Brown Western Boundary Cruise (Rapid/MOC/MOCHA/WBTS)

Watchstander:

We are writing to inform you of an opportunity for two graduate students or volunteers to participate at sea on an upcoming NOAA Western Boundary Time Series cruise in the NOAA Atlantic that will be servicing the UK's Rapid moorings for the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) array along 26N. Two of the positions will be to assist with the physical oceanography program on this cruise including carrying out the CTD casts, assisting with documentation and water sampling, and examination of the data. The cruise is currently scheduled to occur from about 14 February 2012 to 6 March 2012 on the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown starting and stopping in Charleston, SC. The cruise will consist of a three short sections in the Straits of Florida and Northwest Providence Channel and the main section east of Abaco Island, Bahamas including approximately 6-7 days of mooring operations. The current cruise dates are: . load ship in Charleston, SC 12-13 February 2012 . depart Charleston 14 February 2012 . occupy WBTS section Transect (~22 days at sea) . arrive Charleston, SC 6 March 2012 There is no financial support for student participants, however travel expenses can be negotiated through the University of Miami's Cooperative Research Institute. Training will be provided on board ship at the start of the cruise. Some basic computer skills are required. The cruise will provide an excellent opportunity to work at sea, and to get to know the oceanography of the North Atlantic. The student positions are open to any volunteers and will stay open until filled. Foreign nationals will need to be approved for participation through NOAA. All cruise participants must take a TB test within one year and fill out a health questionnaire. Graduate students must have approval from their graduate advisors for participation. Dr. Molly Baringer (NOAA-AOML) will be Chief Scientist.

For additional information on this program, please visit the following web sites: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/phod/wbts/index.php http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/rapidmoc/ http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/users/mocha/ Approximately 60 stations are planned where we lower a CTD/rosette to measure the temperature, salinity, oxygen, and currents from just below the sea surface to approximately 10 meters above the ocean bottom. During each of these stations we also collect up to 24 water samples for measurement of various water properties, including dissolved oxygen and salinity. Mooring operations include recovery and redeployment of four tall moorings with a mixture of microcats and current meters, and five short moorings including a short upward looking ADCP mooring, a 400 m mooring with microcats and current meters, and three bottom landers instrumented with bottom pressure recorders. At five IES mooring sites we will stop to telemeter the data to the ship via acoustic telemetry using an over-the-side transducer. Please note that rough sea conditions can be expected from time to time. Also, the cruise is fairly long. We thus recommend that students who apply be confident that they can handle such conditions. Informal email letters of application for the 2 physical oceanographic positions may be sent to Chief Scientist Molly Baringer Molly.Baringer@noaa.gov) The applicant should provide a brief summary of their research interests and experience, and graduate students should include the e-mail address of their advisor.

Small scale dynamics, measurement of velocity to determine Reynolds Stresses, conversion of energy from large scale motions to true 3D turbulence in the presence of stratification and the problem with the large separation of scales, vortical structures under waves, deliberate tracer injections, enhancing clear communication of science to the general public and or news writers, getting scientific data into SQL databases. Mostly smaller scale features but I have been working on projects at mesoscale eddy scale. I am very interested in mixing in the Southern ocean. Surface layer dynamics is another area of interest. I am interested in instrument development and deployment. I have a continuing interest in the scattering of high frequency acoustical waves from phytoplankton (with the intent to measure their passive velocities). I am interested getting velocity sensors onto floats either moored or free drifting, MAVS or ADVs preferably. I would like to do a detailed comparison of the various ADVs (manufacturer and frequency), MAVS and the small ADCP-eske sensors that are range gated. I am also interested in the parametrization of the physics of turbulence in RaNS turbulence models via direct measurement of the Reynolds stresses on the appropriate scales. I would love to be involved in any attempt to apply LDV or PIV methods in the ocean although that has many problems beyond what Tom Osborns group has accomplished.

Seeking Opportunities
Interested in all areas of marine research, ship and equipment operations.  I hold multiple technical and engineering certifications including American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Master Marine Technician, Marine Electrical, Marine Systems, Marine Corrosion, and Diesel Engines. In addition, certifications in marine electronics, computer hardware and software, law, and scuba open water are held.  I have installed and configured wired and wireless networks, and satellite communications for voice, data, and Internet access.  Although my electronics certification is from Raymarine, I have also installed, configured and/ or repaired other electronics and command and control systems from most leading manufacturers.  I have over 30 years of safe boating experience - power and sail up to 72 ft. (45 g.t.), including over 5 years professional experience, and over 400 on deck service days logged, including "at sea" piloting and supervising crew.  Most recently, I participated as a volunteer researcher in the Delaware Horseshoe Crab and fish surveys with the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays organization.
